Shop Talk - Tabs Glossary
Now you can talk just like someone in the industry! This glossary gives you definitions of the words we use every day and key phrases to help you define what processes might optimize the impact of your project.

How Many Titles
A title is the wording or letters/numbers on a single tab. The number of titles is based on how many individual tabs you will need for each book or report. Example: Say the report in Project A has 14 sections that need to be divided by tabs. Project A requires 14 titles.

How Many Sets
The number of sets is determined by the total number of books or reports you are creating. Example: Say Project A requires 50 books or reports. Project A will need 50 sets of tabs.

Size of Cut
A single row of tabs is referred to as a bank of tabs. Cut pertains to the length of a single tab. The illustration below shows one-fourth cut tabs, or four tabs to a bank. If the cut were one-eighth, the tabs would be half the length, thus giving you eight tabs to a bank.

At Alaska Tab & Bind, our standard dies are adjustable from a length of 5/8" (16 tabs per bank) to 10" (one tab per bank). For certain kinds of titles, such as numbers and letters, can be layered to provide up to 25 tabs per bank.

To figure the length of tabs on an 11" sheet of paper, for planning and typesetting purposes, indent 1/2" on each end and divide the remainder by the number of tabs you want in a bank. Example: To come up with seven tabs to a bank, the tab length would be 10" 7 = 1.43".

Cut Only vs. Cut and Mylar
Mylar is a strip of transparent laminate used to cover and reinforce tabs. Mylar protects the tab from wear and tear and keeps the edges of the tab from tearing or fraying. We strongly recommend Mylar for heavily used reference materials. Alaska Tab & Bind offers 22 colors of Mylar to choose from, including fluorescent colors and clear.

Stock Size
Stock in a print shop refers to paper. Stock is ordered in parent-size sheets, then cut to the size needed for printing. Since we start with parent-size of paper, we are able to cut the stock to a variety of sizes, suited specifically to your needs. Most tab projects are for 8.5" by 11" paper, thus, the stock needed for the tabs is 9" by 11". To figure the stock size you will need, take the size of paper you are using for your document and add 1/2" for where the tabs will stick out.

Paper Type
Any cover, index, or bristol weight paper can be used to make tabs, as well as any color paper. Keep in mind that if you wish to have Mylar on your tabs, some textures of paper may not hold adhere. Mylar as well.

Reinforcing
Clear acetate reinforcing is placed on the opposite side of the paper from the tab to add strength to the holes and prevent tearing under heavy use.

3-Hole Drilled
Alaska Tab & Bind is able to drill holes to any specification. Often, this is a regular 3-hole pattern used in most 3-ring binders. However, we can drill to any template as many holes in any configuration you need. 1/8" to 1/2" drill sizes are available.
