Shop Talk - Lamination Glossary
Now you can talk just like someone in the industry! This glossary gives you definitions of the words we use every day and key phrases to help you define what processes might optimize the impact of your project.
Thickness of Lamination
Lamination is manufactured at set thicknesses, known as "mils." Thicknesses range from 1.8 mil, which hardly adds any thickness to your paper, to 10 mil, which greatly thickens your paper. Alaska Tab & Bind also offers 3 and 5 mil lamination. The mid-thicknesses provide strength and body, but can still be folded.
Trimming
Trimming options are based on need and proposed use of materials. Lamination can be trimmed flush, or right to the edge of the paper. With flush trimming, moisture can seep in through the sides. Flush trimming is for jobs where the laminated look is desired, but won't be in an environment that will easily damage the product.
Other trims include 1/8", 1/4" and 1/2" trims, which means there will be that measurement of lamination all around the product. This trim is applied when the product will be used in a rough environment. The product will be sealed on all sides from the environment. For thicker laminations, having the corners rounded is helpful as the points can be rather sharp (corner-rounding is a separate charge and is available in 1/8", 1/4", and 3/8" sizes.)
